What Information Can Be Stored in a QR Code?

QR Code Data Capacity

A QR code can store up to 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric characters, or about 2,953 bytes of binary data. In practice, QR codes work best with short content — long URLs encode just as well as short ones, as long as they fit within the capacity.

Data Types Supported

  • URL: Most common. Opens a website when scanned. Start with https://
  • Plain text: Any text message, up to the capacity limit
  • Email: Opens email client with pre-filled To, Subject, Body
  • Phone number: Opens phone dialer. Format: tel:+1234567890
  • SMS: Opens messaging app with pre-filled number and text
  • vCard: Electronic business card with name, phone, email, address
  • Wi-Fi: Connects to a network without typing the password
  • Location: Opens maps to a specific GPS coordinate
  • Calendar event: Adds an event to the device's calendar

Scan to Verify Content

Always scan an unknown QR code to see its content before clicking any links. Use the QR Scanner tool to safely preview the URL before opening it.
