What Is an Aspect Ratio?
An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between an image's width and height. Written as width:height (e.g., 16:9), it tells you the shape of the image but not its actual pixel dimensions.
Common Aspect Ratios and Their Uses
- 1:1 (Square) — Instagram posts, profile photos, app icons
- 4:3 — Standard TV, old-format photos, presentations
- 16:9 — Widescreen video, YouTube, desktop wallpapers
- 9:16 — Vertical video, Stories, Reels, TikTok
- 4:5 — Instagram portrait posts (takes more feed space)
- 3:2 — Classic 35mm film, DSLR photos
- 2:1 — Panoramic, Twitter/X header
- 21:9 — Ultrawide cinema, widescreen monitors
How to Choose the Right Ratio
First ask: where will this image appear? Each platform and use case has an optimal ratio. Square (1:1) is the safest universal choice — it works almost everywhere. For video-related content, 16:9 is the industry standard.
Converting Ratios to Pixels
To find pixel dimensions at a given ratio, multiply: for 16:9 at 1080p width → 1080 × (9/16) = 607.5 ≈ 608 px height. Use the image crop tool's ratio lock feature to automatically maintain these proportions.
