How to Crop a Photo Into a Circle Online

Why Circular Profile Photos Look Better

Circular profile photos have become the standard across most social platforms — LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp all display profile pictures in a circle. Uploading a pre-cropped circle ensures your face is centered and nothing important is cut off.

Requirements for Circle Crops

  • Start with a square (1:1) crop — a circle inscribed in a square
  • Use PNG format to preserve the transparent background around the circle
  • Recommended minimum size: 400 × 400 px

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Image Crop tool.
  2. Upload your photo.
  3. Select the 1:1 (Square) ratio and crop tightly around your face.
  4. Download as PNG.
  5. Use a circle mask in your design tool or let the platform apply its own circular mask.

Pro Tip: Keep the Face Centered

Most platforms apply the circular mask centered on the image. Make sure your face is in the exact center of your square crop. Leave a small margin around the face edges — don't crop too tightly or the circle mask will clip your forehead or chin.
