How to Crop Photos for Printing: Size and Resolution Guide

Print Resolution: The 300 DPI Rule

For sharp print results, you need at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). This means a 4×6 inch print requires at least 1200 × 1800 pixels. A 5×7 print needs 1500 × 2100 pixels minimum.

Common Print Sizes and Required Pixel Dimensions

  • 4 × 6 inches: 1200 × 1800 px
  • 5 × 7 inches: 1500 × 2100 px
  • 8 × 10 inches: 2400 × 3000 px
  • 11 × 14 inches: 3300 × 4200 px
  • 16 × 20 inches: 4800 × 6000 px
  • 20 × 30 inches: 6000 × 9000 px

How to Crop for Print

  1. Determine your print size (e.g., 4×6 = 3:2 ratio).
  2. Open Image Crop tool and select the matching ratio (3:2 for 4×6 or 6×4).
  3. Ensure your source image has enough pixels for the target resolution.
  4. Download at full quality.

Important: Check Before You Print

Never upscale a small image to meet print size requirements — it will be blurry. Always check that your source image has enough resolution. Most modern smartphone cameras produce 12+ megapixel images, which is plenty for large prints.
