YouTube Thumbnail Requirements
YouTube thumbnails must be 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9 ratio), under 2MB, and in JPG, GIF, or PNG format. A correctly sized thumbnail looks sharp on all devices, from phones to 4K TVs.
Why Your Thumbnail Gets Cut Off
If you upload an image that isn't 16:9, YouTube will letterbox or crop it. This is why your subject might appear cut off in the sidebar even though it looks fine in the upload preview.
Step-by-Step: Crop to 16:9
- Open Image Crop tool.
- Upload your photo.
- Select the 16:9 aspect ratio preset.
- Position the crop to include your face/text in the center-safe zone.
- Download and upload to YouTube.
The Safe Zone Rule
Keep important elements in the middle 60% of the thumbnail. YouTube overlays the video duration in the bottom-right corner and sometimes shows progress bar overlays along the bottom edge. Don't place critical text or faces in these areas.
Thumbnail Best Practices
- Use high contrast between subject and background
- Limit text to 3-5 words in a large, readable font
- Show a human face when possible — eyes drive click-through
- Use bright, saturated colors that stand out in search results
