How to Vectorize an Image: Complete Beginner Guide

What Does "Vectorize" Mean?

Vectorizing converts a raster image (made of pixels) into a vector image (made of mathematical paths). The process is called autotracing or image tracing. The software analyzes color boundaries in your image and converts them to smooth Bezier curves and straight lines.

What Happens During Vectorization

  1. The algorithm scans your image for color regions
  2. It traces the boundaries between different colors
  3. The traces are converted to vector paths
  4. The paths are saved in SVG (or other vector) format

Best Results Come From Simple Images

  • Logos and icons — excellent
  • Illustrations with flat colors — great
  • Hand-drawn line art — good if high contrast
  • Photos — poor (too many colors, gradients don't vectorize well)
